Session 1 - Identification
- Mental health presentations in Primary Care: Depression, stress, perinatal mental health, anxiety (to include GAD, Social Anxiety, Health anxiety OCD) Self harm
- how they present/ what they look like
- How to triage and assess- what questions to ask, what things to be mindful of- i.e., risk, safeguarding, capacity
- Differential diagnosis- personality disorders, mania, ADHD/ Autism
- Myth busters
- Use of outcome measures- GAD7 PHQ9
- Patient experiences
Session 2 - Management and referral
- Management of mental health in primary Care – what can Primary Care staff do
- NICE guidance and explanation of the step care model
- Identify patients that can be managed/ treated in primary care and patients’ that need to be stepped up to secondary care/ specialist services
- Referral options – 3rd sector, social prescribing, Primary Care (talking therapy, counselling) Secondary care mental health services
- Self-help- mindfulness, books on prescription, online resources
- Prescribing- first line treatments
- 5 steps to well being
- Case studies and patient examples
Session 3 - Risk assessment and management
- Identification- self harm, suicide- - questions to ask, how to respond
- What primary care staff can do to manage low level risk- patient self-management, helpline numbers, resources
- When and how to act when risk escalates
- Safety planning
- Referral to specialist services- crisis team
- Case studies
