For Practice nurses is designed to provide them with the knowledge and skills to deliver basic Ear Care in general practice. We will cover taking an ear care history, examination of the ear, and ear conditions treated in primary care.
Course content/learning outcomes
- Anatomy and physiology of the ear
- Common ear problems and treatment
- Foreign bodies
- Earache
- Infection
- Earwax blockage (cerumen impaction) - Promotion of safe and effective personal ear care
- Examination of the ear using an otoscope – practical within the group
- Case Studies
At the end of the session the participants should:
• Have a theoretical knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the ear
• Demonstrate correct use of an otoscope
• Be able to identify various conditions that can affect the ear and know how to treat and advise
them on prevention
• Be able to assess and form a plan of care
